A Scunthorpe company boss has disclosed that it was the story of four-year-old Kira Yates reported in the Telegraph that prompted her and her firm to chip in to the fund to take a hundred seriously ill children to see Father Christmas in Lapland at Christmas.
After reading about Kira . . . a little girl from Belton who suffers from Apert’s syndrome and who has undergone a series of major operations . . . Jane Wright, the Managing Director of the Eddie Wright car supermarket contacted When You Wish Upon A Star and offered to pay for two of the children on the flight on December 10th.
Jane’s personally chipping in for one seat and the firm’s paying for the second.
Handing over the cash to Pat Wright, one of the charity’s co-ordinators, Jane said: “It was almost by chance that I saw the Telegraph the day that Kira’s story was on the front page. I thought I must do something and, having spoken to Pat, I am very pleased that I did.”
“The charity has been running since the mid-1990s and according to Pat this has been the toughest fund-raising year they have ever experienced. Without the Telegraph’s brilliant campaign, the trip - and indeed future operations - could have been in trouble.”
“Getting commercial sponsorship in the current economic climate is difficult. Many businesses are, of course, having a difficult time and there are approaches from people raising money for a range of very good causes. Undoubtedly there are some companies that are concerned that if they support one cause they will upset others that they cannot support.”
“That said, When You Wish Upon A Star is a very special cause. It is a purely local charity that raises money in the area to send seriously ill local children on this and other dream trips. It would be a tragedy if its work was affected by the current climate, tough as it is.”
