The efforts of Scunthorpe’s Rome to home charity cycling team will reach a climax on Friday evening when supporters stage a party to celebrate the ride – and the bikes used on the 12 day 1300 mile trip will be auctioned off.
Three local lads . . . Luke Francis, Levi Mansfield and Carl Smithson – did the epic trip as a memorial to Luke’s brother, Ben Leaning, a corporal in the Queen’s Royal Lancers who was killed In Iraq two years ago.
Sponsorship money raised by the trip is going to Help For Heroes, the charity that was set up to provide support for wounded British soldiers and their families.
Levi said: “ The middle of a recession’s clearly not the best time to be fundraising but despite the fact that money is tight, local firms and people have been very generous to us either in cash or kind. We are confident that we will comfortably top our two thousand pounds target.”
One big wodge of cash has come from top local car dealership Eddie Wright, who were the major commercial sponsors, backing the boys to the tune of £500.
Levi, who works for Maximum Security, which handles security at the car supermarket site, explained: “The managing director of the firm Jane Wright heard that we were finding it difficult to attract commercial backers and she stepped in with the offer of £500, which gave us a real boost at just the right time. Brilliant!”
“Other major sponsors included Fallen Hero, which gave us £450 and provided clothing, meanwhile Ben’s regiment, the Queen’s Royal Lancers, supplied us with rations – and £500 in sponsorship.”
The party to mark the end of the project is to be staged at The Royal Hotel on Friday evening and will see the bikes used on the trip – top notch Claud Butler mountain bikes – going under the hammer, along with another bike that has been donated by a local dealer and a host of other donations ranging from beauty treatments to a week-end break.
Levi said: “There’s some cracking stuff being sold off for the fund and everyone’s welcome to come along and join in. Tickets cost £10 and are available through Luke on 0779-151-7056 or they can be bought on the door on the night.”
Now fully recovered from the high-speed ride, the boys have revealed that not a glass of wine passed their lips on the entire trip through the continent!
Carl said: “The schedule and the pace was so fast that we just did not dare end up with hangovers. We did not have a drink until we boarded the ferry for the journey back over to Hull – and even then we were very careful. We plan to take more time when we do the ride again!”
