Scunthorpe will this week-end get an unusual chance to meet the men and machines hoping to bring Premier League speedway glory to the town this year.
Machines, riders and officials of the newly promoted Scunthorpe Scorpions are to mount a display in the unlikely surroundings of one of the plushest car showrooms in the region.
The Eddie Wright car supermarket became one of the Scorpions main sponsors earlier this year in a deal that will see the dealership supporting the speedway team for the next twenty years.
Speedway machines will be on display in the main showroom during the weekend, as will the silverware won by the team in recent seasons and members of the team will be dropping in during the two days.
Scorpions Marketing Manager Julie Harrowven said: “ We’ve never tried anything like this before but we are delighted that our sponsors have given us the chance to raise the profile of the team with local people who may not have thought about coming to see us before.”
“There is massive excitement about the new season. We’re in with the big boys this season, in the Premier League, and it will be taking the competition to an entirely different level. Some big names and some terrific teams are going to be racing in North Lincs.”
“I hope car buyers . . . and anyone else who fancies taking a look . . . will come along on Saturday or Sunday and have a chat with us and find out about the forthcoming year.”
Eddie Wright Managing Director Jane Wright said: “ We thought it might be a fun thing to do just a couple of weeks before the start of the new season.”
“The Scorpions are one of our major sponsorships this year, our 75th year, and we’ll do all we can to support the boys. If this helps to raise awareness of what is going to be an incredibly exciting and entertaining local sporting attraction this year then we will be really pleased.”
Jane added: “We haven’t currently got any speedway machines for sale . . . and it is a long, long time since the firm sold a motor bike . . . but if this goes well you never know!”
The speedway display is taking place between 10am and 4pm on both Saturday and Sunday.
