The year 2010 may go down as a tough one for many folk but it ended in typical style for one of the area’s luckiest men . . . thanks to a £2,000 cash prize from his car dealer.
For accountant Steve Richardson of Hatfield near Doncaster, the handy seasonal bonus was just the continuation of an amazing run of good fortune during the year that, amongst other things, saw him pull off a trifecta bet at Doncaster Races – and opt to put his money on Spain to win the World Cup.
Steve’s latest win came in a free cash prize draw competition run by the area’s leading local car supermarket Eddie Wright that was open to anyone who bought a car or had a test drive during the period between mid-November and mid-December.
Almost two hundred tickets went into the hat but, of course, it was number 23 . . . awarded to Steve when he bought a car three weeks ago . . . that was drawn out by company director Paul Wright.
"Actually, I really am not normally a particularly lucky person,” laughed Steve, “but I have to admit that 2010 has been a very good year!"
"It started early on when a fifty pence combination trifecta bet . . . which involves correctly predicting the 1,2,3 order of horses . . . came off at Doncaster Races. That won me £1,500."
"I also put £150 on Spain to win ahead of the World Cup. I know it wasn’t very patriotic but at 4-1 that produced a win of £600. There have also been a few other bits and pieces too."
Steve added: "When I traded in a Nissan 350Z, that was costing me a fortune to run, for a Honda Civic I was vaguely aware that my name would be going into the draw but to be honest I was really thinking about the car and the deal rather than anything else."
"I was absolutely gobsmacked when Eddie Wright’s sales director Bruce Hewitt telephoned to say that I had won the competition – and that the prize was £2,000 in cash."
The prize amounted to around 20% of the price that Steve had paid for his car.
Bruce said: " We’ve had a very good year and the idea of the cash prize draw was to give something back and to say thanks to our customers. As well as the main draw, everyone actually buying a car during the month got £200 cashback – including Steve of course!"
"It might seem strange that the competition was won by someone from out of the immediate local area but thanks to the Internet and national marketing, people from all over the country are now buying cars here in Scunthorpe. I believe that when Steve decided what model and year he wanted, we had the most competitively priced car in the country."
"He certainly has had an amazing run of luck during the year."
