Firm invests in ‘green’ facilities

Costing close to a million pounds, what is said to be the greenest vehicle preparation centre in the country has gone into operation in Scunthorpe. The new centre, at the Eddie Wright car supermarket on Warren Road, is being described by industry experts as a state-of-the-art facility which rivals anything anywhere in the country.

A specialist team has been recruited to operate the new centre, which it is intended will slash vehicle preparation time at the award-winning used car dealership by three-quarters.

Following working-up trials, the centre has now gone into full production.

Eddie Wright chairman Tony Wright said: “The prep centre is a key part of our operation. It is the place where all the cosmetic work on the cars is carried out before they are offered for sale, everything from bodywork and paint repairs to the refurbishing of alloy wheels."

"It is clearly a big investment for the company but it will have a major impact on the quality and efficiency of our operation."

"Most importantly from the car-buying public’s point of view is the fact it will mean that the preparation of vehicles will reach an unprecedented standard."

He said it would slash the time it takes between stock arriving on the site and being approved for display in the showrooms and said: “As the size of our operation has grown the vehicle preparation stage has become something of a bottleneck, despite the development of our facilities and the involvement of numerous local sub-contractors."

“At busy times, when a lot of new cars are being brought in, we have been looking at vehicles taking up to four weeks to undergo preparation. We believe the new centre can cut that down
to six days.”

Tony added: “The project has been under consideration for some time. We were initially looking at something rather simpler."

“However, having been advised by some of the leading experts in this field, we have gone for an absolutely top of the range modern facility, with the best equipment available.”

At the heart of the centre are a pair of the latest generation of side-loading Junair 4 Series spray booths, highly energy efficient units that have won the support of the Carbon Trust.

Andrew Moring, a senior executive with Morelli, the leading automotive industry paint and equipment specialists, which has been advising Eddie Wright on the project, said: “It is a very impressive
preparation centre, as good as anything that you’ll see at a major car supermarket anywhere in the country.”

While primarily intended to handle the car supermarket’s own work, the company is to consider opening the facility to retail work later in the year should the centre have spare capacity.
